The Jazz Bigband Graz (JBBG) is one of Austria’s most distinctive large jazz ensembles, bringing together the energy of a big band with the openness and experimental spirit of contemporary music. For more than 25 years, the orchestra has explored new possibilities for large jazz ensembles, combining improvisation, composition, and sound experimentation into a unique artistic language.

Since 2026, the JBBG has continued under the artistic direction of Horst-Michael Schaffer and Emiliano Sampaio. Together, they are further developing the orchestra’s musical identity through original compositions, ambitious collaborative projects, and encounters with musicians from diverse backgrounds. Moving between contemporary jazz, experimental music, and influences from a wide range of musical traditions, the orchestra treats the big band not simply as a traditional format, but as a space for artistic research and creative discovery.

With its distinctive sound, adventurous repertoire, and commitment to new musical perspectives, the Jazz Bigband Graz continues to challenge expectations of what a contemporary big band can be.
